49 Star Flag
On Independence Day, July 4, 1959, the United States flew a new flag for the first time since 1912. This new flag’s star field held 49 stars, with the admission of Alaska as a state. The 49-star flag was used for one year . . . until July 4, 1960, when today’s 50-star flag was adopted, with the admission of Hawaii as a state.
Long may it wave!
